The creation of a large contemporary art museum on the model of the Guggenheim of Bilbao in Catanzaro. This is proposed by Piero Mascitti, artistic executor of Mimmo Rotella’s estate and president of the Mimmo Rotella Archive.

“Not because this is my city – says Mascitti in a note – but because it is located in the center of Calabria: it would attract visitors from the whole region and neighboring ones, with the ambition of becoming a reference for the whole of central-south.

For the creation of this museum I think of great architects such as Renzo Piano, Frank O Gehry, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid Architects, Mario Bellini (I created a monograph of the latter in his role as architect, with a preface by Kenneth Frampton)”.

“I think – he continues – of an institution capable of guaranteeing a rich and quality cultural offer, supported by a structure equipped with spaces divided into galleries for exhibitions, an auditorium for concerts, conferences and seminars, multifunctional rooms equipped for study and educational, of a library dedicated to art. I would like this museum to be home to a permanent collection of works by Mimmo Rotella. The foundation of the same name, of which I am co-founder and I was director, has a notable heritage of his works and could I often spoke with Rotella about the creation of this museum: he had lived in Paris and had seen the creation of the Center Pompidou. Since then he had something similar in mind for his beloved land: an important center capable of involving the Calabrians firsthand, bringing them closer to art”.

“This – concludes Mascitti – is also my idea: a structure capable of hosting small and large exhibitions, events, cultural exchanges, educational moments for adults and children, research; a place where people can feel at home and become users of art , music, poetry, beauty; a place that the Calabrians can be proud of. I would like to name this museum after Mimmo Rotella, inaugurating it with an exhibition of works by Pablo Picasso in collaboration with the Picasso museum in Paris. And I would then give space to young people offering them a place where they can express themselves and make themselves known in a counterpoint of Calabria and internationality: a place that could become an important cultural center of contemporary Italian art”.
