Modena, union in mourning: Adelmo Bastoni has died – Society

For years Lapressa.it has offered free and independent information to its readers without any type of public contribution. Private advertising covers part of the costs, but it is not sufficient. For this reason we ask those who read us and follow us every day to give us, if they wish, a contribution based on their possibilities. Even a small support, multiplied by the tens of thousands of people from Modena and Emilia-Romagna who read us every day, is fundamental.

Mourning in the world of trade unions. Adelmo Bastoni, historic trade union leader, 94 years old, originally from Castelfranco Emilia, where he continued to live after retiring from public life, also carrying out voluntary work, has died. Adelmo Bastoni, from a peasant family, began his activity in the 1950s as secretary of the local Chamber of Labour. In 1955 and until 1963 he moved to the provincial Federmezzadri covering various roles and finally that of provincial secretary. In 1963 and until 1979 he was first organiser, then secretary of the Provincial Chamber of Labor of Modena. In the years 1979-1988 he moved to Bologna in the regional CGIL. In 1988 he retired and was elected regional secretary of the Spi/Cgil pensioners union for two terms until 1997. After retirement he continued to carry out voluntary activities in the Castelfranco area, he was also president of the ASP Delia Repetto, a structure for assistance to self-sufficient and non-self-sufficient elderly people in Castelfranco Emilia.

‘With him goes a piece of the Chamber of Labor of Modena, a great man and a great union leader whose history is comparable to the history of the twentieth century. He continued to be an example for our entire management group – states Daniele Dieci, secretary of the CGIL of Modena – he also participated in the 120th anniversary of the CGIL, and has always been close to our initiatives, a point of reference also for politics of the territory ‘.

In September 2016 the pensioners union Spi Cgil presented his biography “My roots in the land and in the union”, written by Bastoni himself together with his nephew Dario, produced by Spi with the care of Adriana Barbolini and Luisa Zuffi. The autobiographical work is the result of the Spi Cgil memory project which aims, among others, to valorise the writings and testimonies of former union leaders and activists.
