The Lombardy Regional Council has approved a motion to ask for Ilaria Salis’s salary as MEP to be seizednewly elected member of parliament in Strasbourg on the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra quota for the alleged occupation of a apartment owned by Aler, the body that manages public housing in Milan. The motion was presented by Marcello Ventura of Fratelli d’Italia and referred to the case that broke out in recent days. In the regional assembly the centre-right prevails.
There was a brawl in the courtroom, with the session suspended for a few minutes. Stadium cheering and signs (like that of the Northern League member Alessandro Corbetta who displayed a panel with the writing “Salis pays the rent”) on an issue that divides public and political opinion, and represents the first big problem for the activist from Monza after the election which resulted in his release from house detention in Budapest.

“In recent days – Ventura declared in a note released this morning – it has been learned through the press that the future honorable has illegally occupied a public housing in the Municipality of Milan. Therefore, it is worth noting what was stated by Aler’s lawyers through the press, where it is ascertained that the MEP did not regularly pay the rent for the assignment of the council house because it was illegal and, despite the reminders sent by the managing body, the accumulated debt was not paid and no valid justifications were provided for the arrears”.
With the motion approved at 1.30 pm on Wednesday 26 June we ask, therefore, “the Council’s commitment also to request legal procedures from Aler for the recovery of the debt boasted against the MEP Ilaria Salis, including the use of the seizure of the current accounts in her name” continues Ventura. He also asks himself “let it come a specific request has been forwarded to the competent judge to obtain the seizure of the current accounts of the MEP, until the accumulated debt is completely satisfied”. In support of the thesis, a document from Aler which shows (as of 13 May) a liability of 90,129.94 euros borne by Salis.
The defense’s response
The MEP has always rejected the accusations. “I haven’t read the motion yet, and I can’t comment on that“, said the lawyer Eugenio Losco, reached by telephone by Wired. Regarding the alleged debt towards Aler, the lawyer replies: “I have no idea how the institution can claim a credit, since my client never received a payment order”.
In recent days Salis had reconstructed the story: it would have been found inside the accommodation by an inspector in 2008, without, however, its presence having ever been ascertained again in the following fifteen years. The regional councilor Onorio Rosati of Avs spoke in this regard about “dossier” by Aler.
