“Ethical AI? Great potential for Alto Adige too”

Conference organized by Confesercenti in the Chamber of Commerce deified precisely the ethical approach towards Artificial Intelligence. Experts agree: “Used ethically it represents great potential”

The future is an opportunity and you cannot be immobilized by fear. Confesercenti organized a conference dedicated to Artificial Intelligence at the Chamber of Commerce. In front of a packed audience, some experts discussed the new possibilities opened up by technological development, focusing, in particular, on the ethical aspects. With the moderation of the journalist Alessia Galeotti, the speakers took turns on stage with remote connection for Francesca Cecamore, member of the Personal Data Protection Authority who provided a general understanding of the rules and upcoming challenges related to privacy.

The hub at Noi Techpark

Obviously the South Tyrolean territory is also affected by this revolution and there are specific subjects responsible for orienting and strengthening the economic world. “Be careful – specifies Roberto Cavaliere, AI expert for the dedicated hub within the Noi Techpark – because there are many non-technological companies that are becoming interested in artificial intelligence. In this hub that we have structured at Noi we are trying to bring together all the economic operators and trade associations. The first approach is that of analyzing and orienting the opportunities for individual companies and then proceeding with the development of AI models based on freely accessible data or directly from the company”.

Be careful who governs the data

In reality, AI has its roots in a historical human need. “Since 1700 we have had the ancestral desire to be able to replicate human intelligence and its mechanisms” explains Alberto Guglielmi, CEO of Opticon Data Solutions. “Today we must pay attention to who governs these powerful data processing. If we think that there are prestigious universities that have to turn to the tech giants to obtain this synthesis of information then we understand that there is a heavy shift in the amount of knowledge towards private individuals. A trend that must clearly be monitored and regulated.”

Fast and predictive justice

The intervention of the Attorney General of the Court of Appeal of Brescia Guido Rispoli was interesting, introducing Artificial Intelligence into the field of predictive justice, imagining its future declinations. “The processing of the fact must remain the responsibility of the magistrate who will insert the data obtaining a sentence of even many pages with speed, uniformity and preparation. Obviously it will be a legal snapshot of the exact historical moment in which it is consulted. In this way, however, companies will also be able to get a fairly precise idea of what could happen legally in the event of a dispute. A sort of all-round consultancy. From an ethical point of view, the only word that can make a difference is transparency in telling us how the algorithm processes and is structured. Of course, if the magistrate is lazy you risk relying totally on the machine. Let’s take into account, however, that this can already happen over a longer period of time. Those who want to find new paths, however, will be able to do so with the support of the car.”

Work and SMEs? Potential

There is also the world of work with a reflection entrusted to Nadia Arnaboldi, vice president of CEDPO. “Technological advancement has always been part of work but fortunately workers have not disappeared. There is, however, a risk that must be interpreted and guided. Just as happened in the agricultural generational change with the advent of machines, the new generations of workers will have to know how to combine traditions with innovations, bringing many professions into the future. It’s about making a reasoned and useful upskill of your skills”. Closing of the conference entrusted to Data Protection Officer from Bolzano Andrea Repetto who coordinated all the work of the conference with great attention to detail. In his report he offered an overview of the awareness and possibilities that artificial intelligence can also open up at a local level. Especially and above all if coordinated with effective and correct use of the data available.
