Polls open from 3pm to 11pm on Saturday and from 7am to 11pm on Sunday in Italy for the European Parliament election. There are 51,198,828 adult voters called to vote (24,898,789 men and 26,300,039 women), of which 1,670,889 abroad. There are 76 Italians who will sit in the European Chamber, out of 720 seats distributed among the 27 member countries. For the first time in Italy, non-resident students can vote outside their municipality of residence.

Citizens of the Czech Republic (for the second day), Latvia, Malta, Slovakia and some French territories also vote on Saturday.

The Italian electoral law provides for a threshold of 4 percent and voters can express from one to three preferenceshowever respecting gender alternation, under penalty of cancellation of the second or third choice.

The candidates who obtain the highest number of preferences on their list will be elected: in the event of a tie, preference will be given to the person higher up on the list.

To guarantee proportionality, the Italian national territory is divided into five supra-regional constituencies which elect a number of MEPs in proportion to the inhabitants. The constituencies are: the North-Western (20 seats), the North-Eastern (15 seats), the Central (15 seats), the Southern (18 seats), the Islands (8 seats).

The voters of Piedmont will also have to express their preference for renew the regional government and the citizens of approximately 3,700 municipalities will have to choose their new mayor.
