Vittoria Savio turned 90 and was celebrated in Airali, the hamlet of Chieri where she was born, surrounded by thirteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, many friends from various associations who, around Italy, support her works in Peru; Her sister Zita, 98, was also there.

Although for health reasons Vittoria has returned to live in a few years now Chieriin Peru her works continue according to her plans and, say the current managers of the various activities, it is as if her spirit still hovers: “how would Vittoria have done it?” “What would Vittoria have said?” this is said in Cusco and surrounding areas because in fact Vittoria has done many things in Peru.

Vittoria Savio, mathematics and physics teacher at the Baldessano classical high school in Carmagnola, in 1980 he left teaching and moved to Peru, giving rise to a series of activities in particular for the benefit of domestic workers, adults, adolescents and children who migrate from rural communities to the city with the illusion of a better life. In most cases, they will suffer exploitation and violence, they will be deprived of the right to study and their dignity and culture will be humiliated.

This commitment by Vittoria, supported financially by many friends scattered throughout Italy, has developed over time into various projects gathered in the Yanapanakusun Center (Let’s help ourselves!) Caith program (integrated assistance center for domestic workers) provides educational and reception services for girls , adolescents and young workers coming mostly from Andean rural areas. The permanent reception center for very young girls who were former domestic workers taken away from their employer and entrusted to the center by the Juvenile Court. The temporary reception center for domestic workers unable to work temporarily due to maternity, health or other reasons. This center has also become a welcome point for tourists and friends who travel to Cusco.

Vittoria also created the “Maria Angola” Project, an early and evening school which since 2004 has offered workers the opportunity to receive an education suited to their needs, receiving a qualification at the end of the course, currently operating with external management.

Today, the jewel in the crown of Vittoria’s projects are the houses of cultures scattered in different villages in the districts of the Andes, in the Selva, in Puno and also in the outskirts of Lima, where teachers welcome children for after-school activities, artistic activities and motor skills, environmental education, also providing support to families; each house hosts 50/60 children.

Many friends continue to support the activities created by Vittoria Savio, in particular the Terre des Hommes Italia association of Milan, the dreams of the children of Saluzzo and Let’s listen to the voices that call by Feletto Umberto Udine to which the 5×1000 can be donated by indicating the no. tax code 94082110308
