Cosma photographs the situation in Abruzzo

The Cosma Association (Abruzzo Mental Health Coordination) aims to obtain recognition for people suffering from a mental illness of their dignity, their freedom, their right to live like others within society.

President Tiziana Arista explains the mental situation in Abruzzo to us

“All indicators are negative. In particular, the staff assigned to services for people with mental health problems is about half the national average. This is therefore a very serious situation. People treated in mental health centers, this is also a difficult situation. And therefore compulsory health treatments are higher because obviously if people are not treated properly, every now and then there is someone who, as they say in the jargon, goes crazy. Consequently there is a need for compulsory healthcare treatment. We do activities with which we try to keep up. Today, for example, we are showing the video of a dance show that took place at the Florian on May 12th. It was created in just a few months by a talented professional Anouscka Brodacz who managed to bring out unimaginable performances from some of the people we deal with. This means that many things can be done. In general they are adults who suffer from complex mental illness problems such as schizophrenia, personality disorders. With the general situation that exists, they are people who cannot handle this anxiety that everything around us causes. It is difficult for these individuals to take the first step, to enter these places because it means recognizing a mental illness. This is why we need to fight stigma, i.e. discrimination based on prejudice towards the mentally ill. For a mentally ill person, suffering stigma means living every day in exclusion, rejection, shame and loneliness.”
