A horse, a pony, a cattle and four goats ended up at auction in the “Machinery-tools-raw materials” category and in the “Agriculture, forestry and fishing machinery” category following a seizure by the Pordenone court. This was communicated by the International Animal Protection Organization, which highlights how this procedure is incongruous and in conflict with the current legislation that protects animals, including the new article 9 of the Constitution and which once again calls for a change of direction: a modification of the legislation that prevent these procedures for every animal species.
Animals as commodities
These are seven sentient beings treated as goods, who ended up on an auction portal together with industrial machinery, cars, household appliances, cans of paint, mosquito nets and other objects. The basic price for the “lot” of the horse (of the Irish breed) and the pony, approximately one year old, is 300 euros, while that of the cattle and four goats (of the Camosciata delle Alpi breed) is 250 euros. The start of registration for the two online auctions is set for 12pm on June 11th.

«The animal auction is an unethical administrative procedure in which animals are considered mere objects», declares the president of Oipa, Massimo Comparotto. «We are very far from the transposition of the Treaty of Lisbon of 2007, which protects animals as “sentient beings”. Sending them to auction is reprehensible.” Oipa hopes that there will be a happy ending for these unfortunate animals, like that of the 57 donkeys of San Poxidenio (Modena) who became famous thanks to the media coverage and the solidarity competition triggered throughout Italy.
