ANCONA – «Enough useless controversies, we are the real victims of this situation». The response from the street vendors in Corso Garibaldi was not long in coming after the attack by some shopkeepers in Corso Garibaldi who complained that the stalls’ stands were ugly and were causing a reduction in customers in the shops in the centre.

«People, since the market of Course Mazzini has moved to Corso Garibaldi (due to the construction site at the Mercato delle Erbe, ed.), it almost no longer enters our stores. First, because we have covered windows. And secondly because street vendors sell products similar to costs minors».

Stalls and shops, it’s a clash

David Linternari, historic merchant of the old Corso, is one of the 15 street vendors who are called into question: «I don’t feel any particular discontent, now we get along pretty well. I find these constant controversies useless. It’s a situation temporary which we hope will end soon. We want to return to our original location, Corso Mazzini.”

«Woe to us if we move – thunders another stallholder, who however requests anonymity – Having moved to Corso Garibaldi is the lesser evil for us. If they put us in square Cavour or in square Pertini, we wouldn’t work anymore. The shopkeepers in the lower part of the Corso complain because they didn’t put us there. So, I ask myself: are we a problem or a resource?”.

And again: «The Municipality extends our workplace from month to month, so we are not able to plan investments. And after this, do we also have to put up with the controversies of colleagues who have shops here? In Corso Mazzini, now that we street vendors aren’t here, it’s a desert. The part of the road in front of the Herb Market has become a wild car park. Rather, I would focus on the state of the work. By September, 30% of worksite must be completed. Are we sure it will happen?”.

Then, the joint note from the itinerant operators: «Hands off market. We operators are an excellence of the capital, the visceral history of the city. We are tired of the constant attacks by shopkeepers, exploited by newspapers that embroider on the temporary location. We are not outlaws, but honest workers.”
