The Tuscany Region has approved the establishment of a regional technical group with the aim of developing the Regional Implementation Plan for Autism by the end of 2024. This Plan must ensure “global” care of people with autism of all age groups, and the provision of all behavioral therapies, including ABA treatments, by the Regional Health Service. The creation of a regional council of associations of family members and autistic people is also envisaged.
A recent resolution of the regional council Tuscany (Resolution no. 575 of 13 May 2024, then modified with Resolution no. 614 of 20 May 2024, due to the presence of a clerical writing error) provided for the establishment of a regional technical group for the purpose of processing by the end of 2024 The Regional Implementation Plan for Autism.
Said Plan must ensure that people with autism of all age groups “global” takeoveralso making use of the treatments recommended in the “Guideline recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder in children and adolescents” of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità – National Guidelines System (of October 2023, read about it at this link). It is also explicitly envisaged that they will be provided paid by the Regional Health Service all the behavioral therapiesincluding treatments ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis, in Italian: Applied Behavior Analysis). Regarding the composition of the technical group, it is specified that it will be made up of at least two specialists identified by local health authorities.
The Regional Council also established that in Temporary time while waiting for the results of the technical table, it will come anyway the continuation of all ABA therapies is guaranteed, and the acceptance of all requests presented from 1 June 2023 to today with a daily reimbursement of 15 euros, with a maximum monthly ceiling of 475 euros. The request for reimbursement of the contribution must be presented together with the proposed therapeutic treatment plan, no longer than six months, drawn up by a specialist doctor from the regional health system.
Finally, the Resolution provides for the establishment of a Regional council of associations of family members and autistic people which guarantees the representation of all associations in Tuscany, and which contributes to the definition of regional policies on autism. (Simona Lancioni)
