Today’s edition of Tuttosport focuses on the revolution at Palermo.
Now we’re here. After many video calls and many overtaking at the last corner, Palermo’s casting for coach and sporting director has reached the closing credits. Alessio Dionisi is the chosen one for the bench, Morgan De Sanctis the one for the sporting director’s chair. We have been working for days to define the details, in the last few hours we moved on to drafting the contracts, which are now ready for both.
The signatures – and the resulting announcement – should arrive today. There are two two-year agreements on the table, with a probable option for the third year at least for the coach. In short, the revolution has started in Palermo, as demonstrated by yesterday’s press release announcing the divorce with Michele Mignani, called up with seven days to go to replace the sacked Eugenio Corini and to try to perform a miracle in the playoffs which didn’t exist. Mignani had signed a contract until 2025. At first the owners had said that he was not a ferryman and that he would coach Palermo also next season, but the management of the last part of the championship and the path to the playoffs evidently did not satisfy Manchester, who decided to focus on another profile.
Let’s start once again, therefore, by Dionisi who finds himself back on the bench after Sassuolo’s dismissal (perhaps reckless due to the way the season ended). The coach was convinced of Palermo’s project which he is ready to relaunch after the disappointment in this year’s playoffs. In Manchester they are determined to invest even more than a year ago when many players arrived in the Rosanero who had already won the Serie B championship. A sumptuous signing campaign in the summer, as well as in the winter (Ranocchia, Diakité and Traorè the reinforcements of January) which however did not bring the desired results. Sports director Leandro Rinaudo, whose contract was expiring, also paid the price for everyone. Now it’s up to De Sanctis – in very close collaboration with Riccardo Bigon who is City’s transfer consultant for European clubs – to rebuild the team. There is a hard core, but it is clear that from today onwards we will start studying how to strengthen Palermo.
There are many issues, starting with Matteo Brunori. The captain has scored 66 goals for Palermo in three years, he has a contract that expires in 2027 but he is tempted by some sirens coming from Serie A, where he has never played. Dionisi, De Sanctis and Bigon have the task of solving the puzzle. The first of many others who will have to find a solution to build a team that takes Serie A. Because Palermo only works for this.
