The event is part of a journey of the Community of Sant’Egidio with some schools in the area

Wednesday 5 June, in Piazza Grassi, approximately three hundred students from IC Colombo and IC Porto Romano secondary schools, took part in the demonstration “Let’s Make Peace?!” organized by the Youth for Peace of the Community of Sant’Egidio.

Between music, enthusiasm and peace slogans, the initiative, presented by Chiara and Yaminalso gave space to two important testimonies from those who experienced the war first-hand: an elderly woman from Fiumicino who survived the Second World War, and the story of a Ukrainian girl, just eleven years old, who arrived in Italy to escape the terrible conflict in his country.

“The Youth of Peace of the Community of Sant’Egidio, who organized this demonstration today (which was also held in Rome and other Italian cities) are young people who are concretely committed to improving their neighborhood by creating a climate of peace and solidarity”, explains Pasquale Riccio of the Community of Sant’Egidio. “But they are young people who also have a global outlook, they feel like citizens of the world and do not remain indifferent to what happens in other countries, such as wars or disasters due to climate change.”

The “Let’s Make Peace” event is part of a journey of the Community of Sant’Egidio with some local schools that began with the first citizen demonstration for peace for Ukraine, in March 2022.

“Last November – concludes Riccio – in collaboration with lC Colombo, we presented an exhibition with drawings and testimonies from all over the world of children who experience war. Today we continue this path with schools because we think it is important to do something concrete to build peace.”

“I have been part of the Youth of Peace for a few years – says Chiara Magrini, university student and volunteer of the Youth for Peace of the Community of Sant’Egidio in Fiumicino – and this experience has allowed me to be able to work concretely for peace, in my own small way, helping others by contributing to cultivating a culture without selfishness, where there is no longer a I but a we. At Fiumicino we are building a group, I hope that more and more boys and girls become involved in our initiatives”.
