Vandals in action last night in Rho. The usual unknowns have set on fire to the wreath placed last April 25th on the fence of the Town Hall, above the plaque that reads “Largo Agostino Casati, mayor of Liberation”. The crown was completely destroyed, the plaque was immediately cleaned of soot and fortunately it was not damaged. Disdain on the part of the municipal administration which comments, “in addition to targeting a public good, the figure of a man who dedicated his life to respecting the principles of freedom and justice, fighting for liberation from the fascist dictatorship and from the horrors of Nazism. He was the first mayor after the Liberation and was an example, throughout his life, of extreme dignity and respect”. Investigations are underway to identify those responsible, the images from the cameras active in the historic center and in the Town Hall area are being examined by the police. The origin of this gesture is not clear, it could be a vandalism action as an end in itself or with a political background, since we are just a few days away from the European elections. It’s not the first time this has happened. In fact, there is a precedent: on the night between 25 and 26 April 2013, unknown persons set fire to the plaque named after Agostino Casati. The mayor at the time, Pietro Romano, interpreted the gesture as an attack on those who strongly believe in the values of democracy, national unity and freedom, asked for the plaque to be redone and inaugurated the new plaque on 25 April 2014 to honor the memory of Agostino Casati and of those who fought with him during the Resistance for the freedom of the homeland.
