LUCCA. To the usual numbers linked to combating and combating drug dealing and property crimes which have led the Carabinieri to a significant number of arrests, complaints and seizures, we must add the activities to combat two particularly hateful and dangerous phenomena for civil society: persecutory acts, mistreatment in the family and violence perpetrated against women and vulnerable groups in general (children, elderly and disabled people) and the multiple forms of labor exploitation.
Arrests and complaints
220 people were arrested by the Carabinieri and 2316 were reported to the Benemerita which prosecuted 81% of all crimes detected throughout the province (11082). To prevent crimes, the Carabinieri leaders carried out 24,682 patrols and reconnaissances during the year with 48,331 soldiers involved, while the operators of the Lucca, Viareggio and Castelnuovo centers handled 19,726 calls to “112” and 16,423 interventions, carrying out to the task of coordinating patrols.
The weaker groups
The force intervened in cases of gender violence such as family mistreatment and persecutory acts which led to the arrest of 12 people, including that of Vittorio Pescaglini, 56 years old, the femicide from Fornaci di Barga. Seventy-eight complaints with the issuing of orders to remove oneself from the family home and a ban on approaching them and with the activation of as many as 41 electronic bracelets. As regards the culture of legality, meetings were organized in 25 schools with the involvement of over 3000 students to create, in the new generations, a solid civic conscience and a critical spirit towards the phenomena of greatest risk, such as drug consumption, alcohol abuse, bullying and the dangers that can arise from the internet. Furthermore, 53 meetings were organized in 30 municipalities to raise awareness among elderly people about the risks of scams.
Labor protection
The Carabinieri Labor Protection command carried out 176 checks in companies in the area, identifying 319 workers, 80 of whom were irregular, 55 illegal and 10 illegal. 40 activities were suspended due to the use of illegal work and serious safety violations and one hundred checks were carried out in companies regarding workplace safety with 59 people reported, of which 20 were non-EU citizens.
Fight against drugs
The fight against drug trafficking, particularly in the vicinity of schools, public parks and railway stations, has allowed the Carabinieri to arrest 56 people, report 78 of them and report 133 to the Prefecture as consumers, seizing over 120 kilos of drugs over the course of of the various operations. The main one took place in Altopascio on 7 September 2023 with the arrest of a well-known entrepreneur for possession of 110 kilos of drugs.
Predatory crimes
Particular attention to the fight against predatory crimes (thefts and robberies). Among the main operations is the raid on the hideout of the gang of 4 Albanians arrested in September 2023 for numerous home burglaries. Of note is the arrest of a twenty-year-old accused of the unintentional murder of Luigi Pulcini, a former trader, which occurred on 6 August in Altopascio.
Environment and Art
The Carabinieri Biodiversity department, thanks to the Carabinieri Units of Orecchiella and Montefalcone, checked 257 people, 597 vehicles with almost 3000 euros of fines for abandoning waste and hunting activities in the Reserve areas. The forestry police carried out 4,242 checks, detecting 411 administrative offenses for a total of over 217 thousand euros with 72 people reported at liberty for numerous crimes including arson, illicit waste trafficking, animal abuse. The soldiers of the Cultural Heritage Protection in the province carried out 10 checks on antiquarian and commercial businesses, also carrying out an inspection in an archaeological area.
