Istat, in Italy public transport meets only in Milan

The only Italian city where people are decidedly satisfied with local public transport and prefer it to their own transport is Milan. This is what emerges from the ‘Quality of life in European cities’ survey, conducted by the European Commission with the contribution of Istat, according to which the inhabitants of Italian cities are on average less satisfied with public transport than those of other European cities. In Italy, in particular, the highest shares of citizens satisfied with public transport, in addition to Milan (fifth in the EU ranking with 55.6% of preferences), are found in Trieste and Bolzano/Bozen, while the lowest percentages they are detected in some cities of southern Italy, in Rome and Perugia. At a European level, the lowest percentages of local public transport use are almost all found in Italy. The use of public transport is in fact not very significant (i.e. it is indicated by less than 25% of inhabitants as the means used most often) in most cities in southern Italy. In Rome and Bologna, public transport is used frequently by approximately 1/3 of the inhabitants. The top 20 cities where the car is the most used means of transport are almost all Italian cities. Perugia is first in the ranking (the car is indicated as the means of transport used most often by 91.2% of the inhabitants), followed by Reggio Calabria, Ancona, Sassari, Taranto and various other cities in both Southern and Northern Italy ( such as Trento, Bergamo and Verona). In Rome, the car is indicated as the vehicle used most often in 58.1% of cases. The Italian cities with the least preference for the car are Venice, Milan and Bolzano/Bozen. The latter represents the second city for least car use (after Stockholm). The motorcycle is used much less than the car. But even in this case the highest percentages of inhabitants who indicate it as a preferential means of transport are largely found in Italian cities: the first in this ranking is Genoa (with 23.1% of residents who use it often), followed by Florence, Trieste, Catania and Naples. In our cities, the use of bicycles still seems rather limited. In most of them, the bicycle is in fact indicated as the vehicle used most often in less than 15% of cases. Compared to other European cities, walking in our cities is indicated more frequently. Rome, on the other hand, is one of the EU cities where this way of traveling is less suitable. Among European cities, various Eastern European cities prefer local public transport, including Prague (where it is indicated as the most used means of transport by 69.1% of residents), Bucharest and Warsaw. The inhabitants of Paris (58.1% of the inhabitants indicate it as the means used most often), Stockholm (56.4%) and Stuttgart (51.8%) also fall into the group of large users of urban public transport.
