In continuity with the positive things that have been achieved since 2017 in the context of the activities undertaken for the valorization of the city’s heritage, the municipal administration of Taranto is making its maximum commitment to the protection and redevelopment of the archaeological assets with the aim of recover and promote not only those owned by the municipality, but also those accessible thanks to the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Superintendence of Underwater Heritage.

In recent months, some of the most important testimonies of the past have been the subject of significant restoration and valorization works financed under the “Social regeneration plan for the crisis area of ​​Taranto” – EX Funds – ILVA. Works which have recently been the subject of checks and inspections by the mayor Rinaldo Melucci, the councilor for culture Angelica Lussoso and the manager Francesco Murianni of the Culture and Events Directorate of the Municipality. The last sites, in chronological order, to be visited were the chamber tombs of via Marche and via Terni, where the redevelopment interventions were successfully completed in compliance with the timetable of the specific recovery and maintenance works envisaged from the broader urban regeneration plan “Taranto Ecosystem”.
Announcing that these sites will soon be available to citizens and tourists again, Mayor Rinaldo Melucci declared: “Our Administration is firmly committed to preserving and enhancing the rich archaeological heritage of Taranto. Recent initiatives and ongoing works are tangible proof of our constant commitment to the culture and history of our city. We are working to make sure that. before long, the chamber tombs will be open to visitors again, as will the hypogea of ​​the historic center which, beneficiaries of the funding provided by the CIS (Institutional Development Contract), will soon be completely accessible to the public. Taranto, as reported by recent journalistic reports, including by prestigious foreign newspapers, has been indicated as an ideal place to visit in 2024. The city has started its process of transformation, change, regeneration on a social, economic and cultural level, it is increasingly at the center of tourism development projects and I am pleased to note that, although there are still some who claim the opposite, many are starting to notice this.”
