A room of the “Bonomo” hospital

The “Lorenzo Bonomo” hospital owes its name to the family of the same name who, to honor the memory of Lorenzo and Giacinta Bonomo, began their charitable activity by creating, within the Andria hospital, a paediatrics pavilion on five floors, complete with its most modern equipment, with a capacity of 110 beds. This pavilion was then subsequently donated to the “Lorenzo Bonomo” Hospital in Andria on 1 July 1969, so that assistance could be continued and strengthened there for the little suffering children.

The hole in the wall

There is a memory of this in a plaque placed right in the Andria hospital: but now the wall that houses the dedication is no longer intact, on the contrary. For the Pathology Unit currently located there, it was decided to create a rectangle that acts as a door right in the center of the wall, which infuriated Riccardo Bonomo, heir to the family of benefactors: «I don’t know who it was who, having responsibility for it, he recently had, with uncommon sensitivity, and with notable bad taste and little sense of the history of the place, the unhealthy idea of opening an opening in a brick wall on the ground floor of the Pediatrics Pavilion of the Andria Hospital to allow easier “Sample Acceptance”. All this immediately below, just a few centimeters away, a bronze plaque which recalls that that Pavilion (ground floor with the four floors above) including the existing equipment was donated by my family to the Andria hospital so that the pediatrician in the area could be strengthened ! But perhaps it’s better not to talk about this. The opening of the “Sample Acceptance” desk under that plaque is a disgrace!

The abandoned bust

But this is not the only affront perpetrated against memory: some time ago, says Bonomo, the “sloppiness” with which the bust of the person bearing the name of the hospital was “guarded, abandoned” and cordoned off under a green tarp at the entrance, waiting for placement. The fact was reported several times to the ASL management but without having any effect, so much so that the person who reported it says that he would have taken the bust back with him, finding a more suitable location for it.
