Water crisis, another demonstration in Agrigento: “We want water”

Yet another demonstration in Agrigento against the water crisis: citizens gave mayor Micciché a document with all their requests.

It was the second demonstration within a week, the one held last Saturday 1 June ad Agrigento. This time not a sit-in in front of the town hall, as happened last May 23rd, but a procession that started from Porta di Ponte, shouting: “We want water.”

The people, with the flags of the union acronyms and a large banner with the slogan of the procession, then marched from via Atenea to Pirandello square. Present in addition to the trade union groups and local associations, there was also the archbishop of Agrigento, Msgr. Alessandro Damianowho also spoke for the audience on stage erected by the demonstrators in the square with a brief intervention.

The people of Agrigento once again found themselves demonstrating for their rights, this time – as has often happened in recent months – to have water in their homes.

Document delivered to mayor Miccichè

An event, the participants explain, served to move local institutions so that they can face the crisis as an absolute priority. In front of the Palazzo San Domenico the procession turned into a sit-ins. A delegation reached the mayor’s offices within the Municipality, delivering a document with citizenship requestsand the reasons for the protest.

Among all, the anger for not having exploited the 40 million euros or more that had been made available for the recovery of the Agrigento water network stands out, which is now causing great problems for the city precisely because of its decadent state which proliferates dispersion of water during its journey in the pipes, for almost 50%.

The mayor was therefore asked for a plan from now on, also looking at climate change and drought, which has mainly affected the agricultural sector in Sicily.
