Railways: Basilicata, changes to circulation for infrastructural improvement interventions

The infrastructural strengthening interventions of the railway lines and stations of Lucania continue in order to guarantee the highest performance standards of the infrastructure, accessibility and travel speed on regional and interregional routes.

To allow scheduled activities from Italian Railway Network (lead company of the FS Group Infrastructure Hub) traffic in Basilicata will undergo some changes, in particular:

– on the Foggia-Potenza route, from 10 June to 14 December, rail circulation will be guaranteed between Foggia and Rocchetta (FG) and between Melfi (PZ) and Potenza, while between Melfi (PZ) and Rocchetta (FG) a replacement service will be provided by bus

– on the Battipaglia (SA)-Potenza-Taranto route, traffic will be suspended between Battipaglia and Potenza from 10 June to 8 September for works to adapt the General Master Plan and speed up the Picerno, Eboli and Bella-Muro plants.

Also from 10 June to 8 September, the second platform of the Potenza Centrale station will be closed for interventions to improve accessibility.
Further details on the traffic measures can be consulted on the sales channels of the railway companies.

PURPOSE OF THE WORK IN PROGRESS

The interruption between Rocchetta Sant’Antonio (FG) and Melfi (PZ), on the Foggia-Potenza line, is necessary to implement some preparatory work for the electrification of the line.

Some tunnels will be upgraded (including those in Leonessa and Capraia) and the bases of the pilings and portals of the high voltage electricity line will be built, both along the line and in the stations.

As regards, however, the interruption of the Battipaglia-Potenza line, in the stretch between Eboli (SA) and the Lucanian capital, the interventions planned in this phase will concern the adaptation of the General Master Plan of the Eboli (SA) stations, Picerno and Bella-Muro (PZ).

In detail, this first tranche of interventions, which will be definitively completed by 2026, will be aimed at speeding up station itineraries, improving accessibility through the creation of pedestrian underpasses, the raising of sidewalks to 55cm, the construction of elevators and tactile routes, as well as the modernization of shelters.

The works in the Potenza Centrale station will be carried out at the same time as those along the Eboli (SA)-Potenza route.

In this phase the interventions will focus on the second platform, which will also be affected by raising works which will bring it to a height of 55 cm in order to facilitate passengers getting on and off the train, and on the installation of a lift and tactile paths.

As part of the interventions planned on the second sidewalk, the modernization of the shelter is also planned.
