a ride to Fano too

In its thirteenth edition, the BICICLETTATA ADRIATICA, founded in 2011 to raise awareness among citizens and institutions of the need for more sustainable mobility and for the completion of the Marche-Abruzzo section of the Adriatica Cycle Route, is still loudly calling for the completion of the essential infrastructures: bridges pedestrian and cycle paths and cycle connections between different cities.

This year there are two destinations to reach with five bike rides:

1. Final goal Senigallia (AN) with one departure from the north (Pesaro) and two from the south (from Ancona and from Jesi), with stops in all the municipalities crossed.

2. Final goal Rose Garden of the Abruzzi (TE) departures one from the north (San Benedetto del Tronto) and one from the south (Francavilla al Mare), with stops in all the municipalities crossed.

The Biciclettata Adriatica, an event born fourteen years ago by a group of cycling enthusiasts, was designed to bring to the attention of the institutions the issues relating to cycling mobility which, over time, has always involved new territories and numerous associations and has seen a long the Adriatic coast the development of the project of one of the most important cycle routes in Europe: the ADRIATIC CYCLE ROUTE.

A project that has grown over the years, also thanks to the hundreds of participants and the constant work carried out, at a national and local level, by the member associations, including the FIAB – Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation. Much has been done for the completion of the coastal cycle infrastructure and today the situation sees the Abruzzo stretch almost completed while the Marche stretch still has a lot to do.

The news recently arrived that the cycle-pedestrian bridge over the Tronto river has been awarded the contract, which will finally unite the cycle paths of Marche and Abruzzo. However, there are many situations still to be resolved where there are delays in the execution of the works or even projects are missing.

THE MARCHE EVENT

The FIAB of the Marche propose the Biciclettata, with the same formula experimented in previous years with, however, more starting points to reach the Rotonda on the sea of Senigallia at 11:00 approximately, one from south to north (from Ancona, Piazza Cavour at 9:00 am) one from west to east (from Jesi, Pieralisi Sports Center at 8.30am) and one from north to south (from Pesaro, Tomato Ball at 8.30am). You can join as per the timetable in any town crossed by the three bike rides.

It will be a pleasant “walk” by bicycle, in the form of an event to promote cycling mobility and to raise awareness among local administrations of the need to complete the area’s cycling infrastructure. The Marche Region seems to have “forgotten” the project to complete the coastal cycle infrastructure, which, although financed within the National System of Tourist Cycle Routes, has slowed down for some time. The stretch that will be covered on Sunday is the best equipped in the region, yet there are still many interruptions and critical issues: some bridge over the Metauro River no trace is seen, the bridge over the Cesano late with the works, the traits of cycle path along the Esino are to be completed and exit and entry to and from Ancona it is simply non-existent, with no project yet put in place, despite the importance of the capital city which has a railway station and ferry port among the most important in the Adriatic.

Going further south the situation is even more dramatic, the overcoming the Conero is still at the level of debate, There is no connection between Porto Recanati, Potenza Picena and Civitanova Marchefurther south the cycle-pedestrian bridge over the Chienti river The contract has been blocked for more than a year and between Porto San Giorgio and Grottammare there is no semblance of an Adriatic cycle path, despite the fact that important resources have been available for intervention for some time.

THE ABRUZZE EVENT

From San Benedetto del Tronto (P.zza Giorgini at 9:00 am), then, the cycle starts towards Abruzzo where the cyclists will arrive by crossing the bridge on road 16, hopefully for the last year, given the announcement of the next construction of the cycle-pedestrian bridge over the Tronto river.

Instead, from the moment they enter Abruzzo, the group will travel along one of the most beautiful Italian cycle paths which crosses without any interruption and four cycle-pedestrian bridges the cities of Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto, and Giulianova up to Roseto degli Abruzzi where you will arrive at the Pineta sul mare at 1.00 pm. The southernmost stretch which with other bridges and dedicated cycle paths is in turn connected to Pineto, Silvi, Città Sant’Angelo, Montesilvano and Pescara, will be covered from beyond the “bridge over the sea” starting from Francavilla a Mare (Piazza del Pontile Sirena at 8.30am) with the other cycling from south to north.

Further south than Francavilla the interruption to reach Ortona is the real problem of the Adriatica Cycle Route in Abruzzo, an issue on which the Abruzzo Region and the Local Authorities should commit themselves more to obtain the connection to the Trabocchi cycle path which continues in the paradise of Abruzzo’s stacks along the former railway route for over 20 km towards Vasto and further south towards Molise.

The appointment is therefore for next Sunday 2 June, everyone will be able to travel the entire route or a shorter stretch on their bike, and then everyone will meet in Senigallia and Roseto, where there will be entertainment and refreshments. The return can take place on board the many regional trains, many of which are specially equipped for the occasion for an enhanced free bicycle transport service.

The Biciclettata Adriatica will therefore be an opportunity to remember the importance of cycling infrastructures which, for one day, will ideally unite two regions, Marche and Abruzzo, awaiting the completion of all the links still missing which, hopefully, will be completed shortly .

Times, however, that cannot go any further considering the successful candidacy of the Ciclovia Adriatica in the EuroVelo network which wants to be presented for the 2026 edition of VeloCity, the international cycling tourism event, which marks the point on the topic every year and which, in that edition it will be hosted in Rimini, right on the Ciclovia Adriatica.
