Guadagnigni violin making competition in Piacenza, the winners

The Second International Violin Making Competition “Giovanni Battista Guadagnini” ended on Saturday evening with a concert by the Dafne Quartet in Piacenza at the Biffi Arte Gallery. An edition that saw a large participation of luthiers with more than 70 string instruments registered. The competition, organized by the Musica e Cultura association with the patronage of the Municipality of Piacenza and with the support of some technical sponsors including Art Defender, brought together over 50 luthiers from Italy (Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, Piedmont) for 3 days in the Emilian city , Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Tuscany and Lazio), China, Bulgaria, Romania, France, Taiwan, Poland, South Korea and the USA.
The jury, chaired by Fabio Perrone (Expert and CTU of the Court of Cremona) with the support of Stefano Conca (secretary) and Federica Periale (legal supervising lawyer), was made up of five luthiers and five musicians: Massimo Ardoli (teacher of the International School of Violin Making in Cremona), Valentina Montanucci (teacher at the Civic School of Violin Making in Milan), Giuseppe Quagliano (luthier), Luca Salvadori (luthier), Liu Zhao Yang (luthier), Aurelia Macovei (violinist), Horses Luciano (violist and teacher at the Parma Conservatory), Alessandro Copia (cellist), Fabio Torrembini (double bass player) e Roberto Codazzi (artistic director of the Violin Museum).

The “Professional Violin Makers” category for the “modern style” violin section saw the affirmation of Marco Cargnelutti (first), Daniele Marini and Jianhua Wang (second prize ex aequo) and again Marco Cargnelutti (third); for the viola section Ryosuke Ito (first) Jinxin Liu (second) Jinwook Hong (third); for the cello section Jinwook Hong (first), Yuanfeng Wang (second), Ivaylo Chobanov (third); for the double bass section Yarong Chen (first). For the “antique style” violin section, Jinwook Hong (first), Georgi Nikolov (second), Jianhua Wang (third) stood out; for the viola section Georgi Nikolov (first); for the cello section Luca Pirini (first) and Rodolfo Bettio (second).
The “Non-Professional Violin Makers” category for the “modern style” violin section saw the affirmation of Seoyeon Kim (first), Changhun Lee (second), Satoshi Ichinose (third); for the viola section Darius Dshokow (first) and Mauro Fabretti (second); for the cello section Fabio Ramella (first). For the “antique style” violin section, Shi Dong (first), Chereches Alin (second), Kensuke Akaogi (third) stood out; for the viola section Daehee Jung (first) and for the cello section Daehee Jung and Beniamino Tonella (first prize ex aequo), again Beniamino Tonella with a second instrument and Bruno Pedroni (third), the latter luthier awarded by the Jury with a mention special for the creation of a second cello whose particular artistry was appreciated.
The instruments classified with first prize in the Guadagnini Competition were played by Aurelia Macovei, Luciano Cavalli, Alessandro Copia and Fabio Torrembini during the awards ceremony, in the presence of the Piacenza Culture Councilor Christian Fiazza who declared for next year, in addition to the renewed municipal patronage of the Violin Making Competition, better valorisation of the musical instruments awarded with an exhibition and a concert in the theatre.
