Rediscover Ancona from the sea, traveling by kayak along the entire coast: the eighth national sea kayak meeting began yesterday. The Conero is the perfect setting for two days on the water to discover the pearls of the Riviera. Organizing the event is Umberto Capriotti, a kayak teacher originally from Grottamare, towards San Benedetto del Tronto. Capriotti is part of Sottocosta, an Italian federation that has always promoted sea kayaking in Italy and around the world and is part of CONI, the national Olympic Committee.

“We have been carrying out this initiative in Ancona for ten years now. Only Covid stopped us – he explains – The sea kayak is a vessel, a type of canoe, designed and built specifically for the sea. These are closed canoes, which have their roots in Northern Europe”. The history of kayaking actually starts from northern Greenland. These means, so to speak, were used by the Inuit to move in the water. And again: “Sea kayaks are long and narrow. This sport – says Dal Passetto – is highly ecological and suitable for everyone.” It moves silently, without moving too much water.

Around forty participants left yesterday from the La Torre campsite in Portonovo to arrive at Passetto around 1pm. Here, an obligatory stop at the caves, where they were hosted by some true Ancona locals who offered lunch to the kayakers. Then, return, again by sea, at 2pm, arriving in Portonovo around 4.30pm. Participants come from all over Italy, Campania (Naples), Puglia, Sicily and Emilia Romagna, just to name a few of the regions. “We made the Passetto caves known to those who took part in the gathering – reflects Capriotti, who combines fun and culture – I always do something cultural during these gatherings. For this reason, yesterday, we visited the little church of Portonovo, to close the evening with a dinner at the ´Emilia´ restaurant.

No Portonovo moscioli on kayakers’ plates. The cooperative usually offers them to kayakers, but at the moment local mussels are in short supply. Departure today at 10am, direction Numana. Then lunch and return. The Numana Naval League escorted the kayaks for security support. The group of kayak lovers is led by federal instructors and technicians with the necessary qualifications to deal with any type of emergency. Meanwhile, for kayak enthusiasts, the AdriaticSeaKayak.it website is worth mentioning.
