REGGIO CALABRIA The theme is central to the dynamics of this region: prevention evidently means opening up an insight into the essential levels of assistance and therefore into one of those paths where Calabria is unfortunately dramatically behind. «I congratulate Corriere della Calabria for having organized a very important moment together with the Mediterranean University. “Let’s play in advance” is a unique initiative that allows – in the place of research and culture such as the university – an in-depth discussion on sport and health by linking it to prevention.
And never before has Calabria needed reflection on this issue”, says Democratic Party senator Nicola Irto. The regional secretary of the Democratic Party is among the speakers on the second day of the event underway in Reggio Calabria. «Healthcare is based on three major issues: prevention, emergency and subsequent home care, if necessary. Unfortunately we are at a significant deficit on all three», claims Irto. Which he adds: «We would like a normal Region and have prevention capable of saving the lives of Calabrians. Unfortunately this doesn’t exist today because there is a lack of doctors, a lack of medical and paramedical staff, and probably also a lack of a culture of prevention among citizens, but even in this case the responsibility is political.”
Healthcare is not just an economic issue
The healthcare system, claimed the president of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità Rocco Bellantone, it is like an old aqueduct that is many years old, many losses are measured, the solution cannot be imagined just by introducing more water. «Resources are needed, but a healthcare reorganization is needed that can keep up with the times, and to do so we need to provide a better and faster service to citizens».
