Migraine is a complex disease, a neurological pathology that affects millions of people around the world, with a significant prevalence among women. It is often underestimated and deserves more attention, especially regarding its gender implications. The Headache Center of the Aou Sassari Neurological Clinic joins on Monday 27 May the second edition of the Open day on migraine organized by the Onda Foundation, the national observatory on women’s and gender health. On the occasion of the day, from 3pm to 4pm, a free videoconference conference will be held, open to all, entitled “Migraine, a gender-specific disease”.

“Migraine, in terms of prevalence, represents the second most widespread form of headache – states Professor Paolo Solla, director of the Neurological Clinic of the Aou of Sassari – Its peculiarity is constituted by the fact that it often affects subjects of a young age and predominantly female”.

The Open day on 27 May represents an opportunity to deepen our knowledge of this pathology, find new ways to deal with it and raise public awareness of the importance of a personalized and conscious approach.

“Often women who suffer from it do not undergo specific medical visits and consequently do not follow adequate therapy.

Sometimes they think it’s normal and don’t even talk about it with the family doctor”, says Francesco Zoroddu, a doctor specialized in the treatment of headaches and migraines in particular.

Migraine is a leading cause of disability globally, characterized by recurrent attacks of headache of moderate or severe intensity, often accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and hypersensitivity to light and sound. “It is a disabling pathology that can have a marked impact on the individual’s daily life and frequently prevents the carrying out of even the simplest activities of everyday life”, highlights Solla.

The information event will delve into why migraines hit women harder and showcase the latest and most innovative therapeutic treatments, including next-generation drugs. “Ours is the only prescribing center in northern Sardinia that has been using monoclonal antibodies, innovative and extremely effective drugs, since 2020.

We follow over 350 people (85% of whom are women) with extremely disabling high-frequency or chronic drug-resistant migraines and many are currently being treated with monoclonal therapy – concludes Zoroddu – In our clinics, on average, 350 new people join the year for a first visit. Of these, approximately 20% are of developmental age, falling between the ages of 4 and 18″.

Participation in the conference via video conference is free and it is necessary to register via the Google meet platform at the link: https://meet.google.com/Wmr-KyeK-wza
