It was the League that dragged the center-right coalition to the regional elections in May 2019.

Everywhere in Piedmont Matteo Salvini’s party had played a leading role, but even more so in Granda where the result was a plebiscite: 108,392 votes, equal to 41.30%.

If we consider that the presidential candidate Alberto Cirio had obtained 178,929 preferences in the Granda, we understand the extent of the Northern League avalanche.

If we then make a comparison with the contribution to the centre-right coalition given by the other two parties of the coalition, which, together, did not reach 15% – Forza Italia 23,980 votes (9.14%), Fratelli d’Italia 14,743 ( 5.62%) – we understand the enormity of the consensus obtained five years ago.

With these numbers, the League had sent three councilors to Turin from the Cuneo area: the former mayor of Santo Stefano Belbo Luigi Genesio Icardi (4596 personal preferences); Paolo Demarchi from Saluzzo (3845) and, thanks to the remains, Matteo Gagliasso from Savigliano (2420).

In the aftermath of the vote – by virtue of personal consensus and the considerable gift brought by the Cuneo League to the centre-right regional majority – Icardi was called to the council as councilor for health.

Over the last five years, political elections have taken place (September 2022) which have changed the political framework.

Not because it has become unfavorable to the centre-right, but rather because the balance of power within the coalition has changed as the Brothers of Italy have become the leading political force.

The game that lies ahead for Salvini’s party in this electoral round is therefore extremely challenging.

The electoral duel – together with the regional elections we vote for Europe and in the Province for 171 Municipalities, including Alba, Bra, Fossano and Saluzzo – will be above all with Fratelli d’Italia, but also with Forza Italia, which in recent months has polls indicate a rise.

A crucial battle therefore for the party which today is called “Lega – Salvini Prime Minister”, but which, based on what the outcome of the polls will be, could be forced to change its name and, consequently, also its corporate name.
