bloody yellow helmets in Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples

Bloody helmets and black shapes on the sheets: construction workers demonstrate in Naples against deaths at work. The unions: “A massacre”

Black shapes traced on the sheetssuch as the findings of the police after an accident. Bloody yellow helmets, like those who are recovered every day after yet another death at work. In Naples the anger of the workers is mounting, one of the categories most plagued by “white” deaths, that is, those that occur in the workplace, sometimes due to a banal inattention, most of the time due to an almost absolute lack of safety measures. An ageless massacre: from the worker close to retirement to the young man who works illegally, people die on construction sites every day, throughout Italy. Their names were written on the white sheets that appeared in the square today.

Today, those who took to the streets were the construction workers working on the construction sites of the Naples metro lines (1 Garibaldi-Piscinola, 6 Mergellina-Municipio, 7 Soccavo-Zoo) and Alifana, who chose to demonstrate in front of the Prefecture of Naples in Piazza del Plebiscito. In front of Palazzo della Foresteria there were all the trade unions of the category, Feneal Uil, Filca Cisl and Fillea Cgil, who today had called an eight-hour strike precisely to raise awareness on the issue of unrelated deaths, after the tragic accident that occurred two days ago on the Metro construction site in Capodichino. On Wednesday 29 May, right in the Prefecture, a summit requested by the unions will be held with the Municipality of Naples, the Campania Region and the supervisory bodies.

“Today is the day of indignation and anger, today is the day of the strike. We believe that this Government must immediately convene the social partners, the trade union organizations to discuss what type of business and work organization it wants to encourage in this country,” he explained Nicola Ricci, general secretary of the CGIL Naples and Campania. She echoes him Antonio Altobelli, of the CISL Napoli secretariat, who recalls: “We have been carrying out an awareness campaign against deaths and accidents at work for years. Enough is enough. We need more responsibility, more training, more controls in the workplace, more prevention. A new culture of safety that promotes the perception of risk”. For Giovanni Sgambati, general secretary of Uil Campania and Naples“it’s a massacre, we will continue this mobilization until we get concrete answers. This is the union: mobilization and agreements”.
