There new Federiciana Library of Fano is ever closer: with the approval of the signed executive project by the Council MCA, Mario Cucinella Architectsthe expression of interest can be officially opened aimed at private individuals who can thus contribute to financing the work, as provided for by special rule 134 of the contracts code.

Redevelopment of the Federiciana Library, a virtuous union between public and private

In 2021 the Municipality of Fano and the Montanari Foundation joined together with the common objective of giving new life to the Federiciana Library, entrusting the design of the recovery and new extension to the star architect Mario Cucinella, Founder & Creative Director of MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects .

The estimated cost to build the new cultural center is 10.5 million euros. 2.5 million will come from the PNRR funds intended for the accessibility of museums, archives and libraries, destined for the part of the intervention relating to the historic 17th century building. Approximately 8 million euros remain to be found from partners and private entities.

Approval by the Council is therefore the last step in a virtuous public/private path, essential for starting the expression of interest and finding the necessary resources.

The preservation of the historic core

The project designed by Studio Mario Cucinella Architects aims to bring the Federiciana Library among the most prestigious European library systems. It involves the reorganization of existing functions, with a reorganization of offices and spaces.

The intent is to preserve the historical core of the library, as well as the precious volumes that it has housed since the second half of the 1600s. For example, the famous Sala dei Globi will be redeveloped while maintaining the wooden shelves and its furnishings.

The extension: a transparent case that communicates with the outside

At the same time, an expansion of the Federiciana Library is also planned, which will be made possible by the demolition of an annexed building without historical and architectural value.

The volume built from scratch will be as one transparent casket. It will be realized on four levels, plus an underground one in which volumes to be preserved will be stored. It will also have one panoramic terrace. Greenery will also have a decisive role, with various levels and terraces, facilitating dialogue between the internal public space and the urban fabric that surrounds it.

The designers carried out a climate study with the aim of optimizing the exposure of the main facade of the new volume, towards the north-west. In this way the building will be protected from direct solar radiation and at the same time will have optimal natural lighting.
