“False or clearly implausible protocols in the million-dollar contracts announced by the prefectures for the management of the detention centers for repatriation”. This is what emerges from the Altreconomia investigation, written by Lorenzo Figoni and Luca Rondi, presented today to the Senate. “The prefectures do not control the CPRs. Investigation into procurement and management”, is the title. Guitar courses, DIY or reading groups are some of the “unrealizable” promises that “the managing bodies of some Italian CPRs have indicated in black and white to win public tenders for a total of almost 25 million euros.

With the approval (and lack of control) of the prefect”, we read in the investigation carried out by analyzing the unpublished documents obtained through civic access by the newspaper. According to the investigation, 33 inspections were carried out in nine detention centers for repatriation: “30% at Palazzo San Gervasio (11 in the period 2019-2024), followed by Milan (six between 2020 and 2023), Bari (six between 2022 and 2023), Rome (three, 2022-August 2023).

Two to Macomer (2020-2024) and Caltanissetta (2023). Only one in Brindisi (2023-2024), Trapani and Gradisca d’Isonzo (the period is not specified)”. Furthermore, the analysis states that in January 2024 “just 462 people passed through the CPRs. Less than 40% of the total capacity foreseen by the contracts equal to 1,281 seats”. In the same period last year, “559” people passed through. “Between January 2023 and the end of February 2024 – it is then highlighted – almost 50% are of Tunisian origin”. Out of a total of “45 nationalities”. Last year there were “6,620 people who passed through the CPRs”. According to data from the National Guarantor for Persons Deprived of Personal Liberty, the investigation states, “3,134 were actually repatriated (less than 50%)”. (Handle)
