lectio magistralis by Ilaria Cucchi

Senator, vice-president of the Justice Commission and human rights activist, Cucchi will address the problems of prison also starting from the sad news events of recent years. In particular, you will reflect on how penitentiary facilities have become, too often, ‘non-places’ where it is increasingly difficult to operate to encourage the inmate’s integration into society. A situation linked to the paradoxes by which penal institutions are affected: compared to an increase in the prison population, the support services provided by the State decrease, the centrality of the role of prisons in political propaganda corresponds to a great distance, which is equally political and also social, compared to the life of our cities. The lecture will explore the importance of recovering the educational role of the penitentiary institution with a view to a new approach that allows us to rebuild a possible and necessary utopia. After the death of her brother Stefano in 2009, a few days after her arrest and while he was subjected to precautionary custody, Ilaria Cucchi undertook a very long legal battle: “I went back and forth from the courtrooms for thirteen years. Not only for Stefano and not only for the last ones, but so that the honor of the institutions in which I have never stopped believing was re-established”. Today her commitment to the rights of prisoners is very strong and for her she ensures that those institutions are able to take care of everyone, starting with those who need it most. For ‘Capital Encounters’, two new events on the calendar are worth mentioning: on Monday 27 May Goffredo Bettini will present his book “Crossings. Stories and encounters of an Italian communist and democrat” (PaperFIRST) in dialogue with the mayor of Pesaro Matteo Ricci and with the parliamentarian Claudio Mancini (Pesaro, Palazzo Gradari – 6.30 pm); Friday 31 May (5.30 pm – Palazzo Gradari) Jacopo Fo will be a guest in Pesaro with his lectio magistralis entitled ‘The science of jesters’. The initiative is promoted by Pesaro Italian Capital of Culture in collaboration with Passaggi Cultura. Entrance to the meetings is free and without reservation.
