A 72 year old womanresident in Carovignowould have been subjected to a surgery to the wrong kidney. The incident dates back to last September, when the woman underwent surgery atPerrino hospital in Brindisi.
The patient claims to have suffered removal of the left adrenal glanddespite having a malformation and a 4-centimeter tumor mass on the right kidneyas a result of clinical examinations.
The woman turned to her lawyer Sandra Di Montewho filed a lawsuit against two doctors for negligent personal injurythe error would have resulted from a incorrect diagnostic report. The Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office has started an investigation and is collecting the relevant clinical documentation.
The first clinical investigations on the woman date back to December 2022 and they also continued during the following weeks. On May 18, 2023, the patient was examined urgently.
The report, as emerges from the complaint, highlights a “right ovarian neoformation (right)performed with abdominal CT with contrast medium with findings of right adrenal lesion (right, 4 cm)“. In the conclusions, however – we read again – we recommend “sin adrenalectomy surgery (left)“. From here the chain of errors would start until the operation on the healthy kidney.
«The medical team that performed the operation – is highlighted in the complaint presented to the police – has failed to carry out any and all checks regarding the correspondence of the doctor’s report with the real situation”.
The error, according to the lawyer, «it was not noticed even during surgery but it became evident only once the adrenalectomy was performed and the histological tests were carried out, from which it emerged that it was a healthy kidney.”
The doctors, according to what was reported by the lawyer, only later realized the mistake and they would have contacted the 72 year old. The doctor, the complaint continues, said «clearly that he had the intervention was wrong and that instead of operating on the right kidney they had operated on the left kidney.” The woman announced that will be a civil party in the possible trial against the doctors.
