An 18-minute audio file could represent a new, heavy indictment against the four Egyptian 007s accused of the kidnapping, torture and murder of Giulio Regeni.

New evidence in support of the accusation that the Rome Prosecutor’s Office asks the Court of Assizes to acquire.

An audio in which a witness speaks according to which a colonel of the investigative police was in possession of Regeni’s passport before carrying out the search, on 24 March 2016, in the house where a member of the criminal gang lived, exterminated with bullets firearm by the police, who were falsely accused of the murder of the Friulian researcher.

This is precisely the expatriation document which, together with other objects, was found in that apartment by the Egyptian authorities. But there is more: the analysis of the records revealed contacts between the police colonel himself and one of the accused.

A video was then shown in the courtroom, taken from open sources and already known in Italy, in which the relatives of the alleged gang of criminals are interviewed: from their statements and based on what was reported by the ROS colonel, Onofrio Panebianco, it also emerged that some objects, such as the wallet, glasses case and earphone, found in the apartment and handed over to Italian investigators years later, did not belong to Regeni.

Misdirection but also altered evidence as in the case of the videos from the video surveillance cameras of the Egyptian capital’s subway. According to what was reported in the courtroom by the prosecutor’s consultants, technicians from the Racis carabinieri and the Scientific Police, the video files of the stop in the Dokki district were deleted, where Giulio’s mobile phone was connected for the last time, on 25 January 2016, the day of his passing. “We discovered that from 25 January 2016 there were no video or image files available in the system – said the consultants -. In other files, referring to the period between 26 and 29 January, we could see that the modification date was different from that of creation”. The consultants, however, recovered the images of January 25th with software but found a “gap of 18-20 minutes, between 7.49pm and 8.08pm”

During the hearing, deputy prosecutor Sergio Colaiocco announced that witness “z”, an Egyptian citizen who provided many useful elements to the investigation, will not be able to come to testify in Italy “because he fears for his and his family’s safety When in the past he collaborated with the Rome prosecutor’s office and was arrested for several months by one of the defendants.”

Instead, after the summer and via videoconference, the Cambridge University professor, Maha Abdelrahman, who tutored Giulio Regeni during the period in which the young researcher was in Cairo, will be heard.
Leaving the judicial citadel in Piazzale Clodio, Regeni’s parents, Claudio and Paola, through their lawyer, Alessandra Ballerini, stated that from the trial “Egyptian misdirections are increasingly emerging.

We are increasingly focusing on Egyptian responsibilities regarding misdirection and tampering. Piece by piece – he observed – we are getting closer to the truth”
