Istat has published the data of the latest census concerning our province. After the decline in the Covid years, the number of residents is growing again, but for the first time in 70 the Under 4s do not reach 20 thousand units. The increase in Over 65s is notable
REGGIO EMILIA – Year 2001: Over 65 residents in the province 94,159. Year 2022: Over 65 residents in the province 118,200. This is the most significant data from the latest census that Istat carried out in our province.
If old age grows in units, childhood instead declines. In just one year, children under 4 decreased by more than 2 thousand, going from 21,566 to 19,445. The average age of the people of Reggio Emilia is over 49 years old and as never before from 1951 to today, the problem of demographic aging haunts our territory (and all of Italy).
In the past it was thought that it was foreigners who compensated for the data of empty cots. In reality, this is no longer the case. It is true that from 2001 to 2022 foreigners residing in the Reggio Emilia area went from just over 20,000 to 64,798, but in recent years the fertility of foreign women has stood at 1.2, very slightly higher than that of Italians.
In this context, family composition is also striking: in 2022, families made up of a single member reached the record of 86,650, while those with more than 6 members reached a negative record of 4,053. The same applies to households with 3, 4 or 5 people, which has progressively decreased over the last 5 years.
One of the most positive data coming out of the census concerns the workforce section: the number of unemployed people is decreasing, going from 14,400 to 11,100, while the number of students has increased by a thousand units, a sign that the university attracts more than it used to. .
