Taranto, over 150 seahorses released in the Mar Piccolo

They were born and raised in the Genoa Aquarium. Beyond 150 seahorses they will now be able to live in the waters of the Little Sea Of Taranto.

The release of the seahorses in one of the three new protected micro-reserves created in the Mar Piccolo Regional Park as part of the conservation project took place in the presence of representatives of the academic world and numerous military and civil authorities, including the mayor of Taranto, Rinaldo Melucci.

The project, launched in June 2023, saw the collection and transport of adult pairs of seahorses from Taranto to Genoa, where a team of biologists and veterinarians worked to ensure the survival of the young in their first months of life. Seahorses in protected areas will now have a safe haven.

«Today is a significant day because we are faced with a symbolic species that we must also protect from poaching – declares Mayor Melucci -. Thinking of reintroducing over 150 seahorses into this wonderful habitat is a sign of hope for our young people, for our businesses, for all the institutions that are at work in what is a decisive juncture for the rebirth of our territory.»
