The wave of bad weather continues in the regions of Northern Italy. Today, May 21, there is a red alert in Lombardy and Veneto, orange in Emilia-Romagna and yellow in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Piedmont and Trentino-Alto Adige. Critical issues also expected in the Marche, Lazio and Umbria. Schools closed in the Bolognese and Modena areas.

In Lombardy: “Avoid unnecessary travel”

Lombardy is one of the regions most affected by the rains in the last few hours. Yesterday there were storms in Pavia and Brianza, today there was a red alert due to hydrogeological risk with heavy rainfall in Milan and the area of the Seveso and Lambro rivers, the level of which is constantly monitored. “I invite the population to pay maximum attention, following the indications of the local authorities and consulting the weather updates – said the Lombard regional councilor for Civil Protection Romano La Russa -. We recommend avoiding unnecessary movements in the areas affected by the alerts and adopting all necessary precautions to ensure maximum safety”.

The situation of Seveso and Lambro

The Milanese Security Councilor Marco Granelli also reported the expected strong disruption. “For the Seveso the basin has been emptied and ready to defend Milan. For the Lambro we are talking to Aipo and placing civil protection and MM stations in Pontelambro and in the most at-risk areas. Underpasses under control and preventive cleaning interventions have been implemented since this morning “, he writes on Facebook.

Extensive damage in Veneto

Red alert has also been triggered in Veneto for the next 24 hours. Governor Luca Zaia fears further damage in areas already affected by last week’s flood. The first rains “could not be problematic if we hadn’t already had a lot of rain – said the president of the Region -. The soil is not able to absorb that water at the moment”. Precipitation is expected “of 100 millimetres, which means around 10 centimeters of water per square metre”, he added. In recent days there have been numerous rescue interventions in the area due to the damage caused by the water bomb which has not yet been completely contained. Zaia defined them as “huge”, but “we still don’t have any data”, he specified. According to CIA Veneto estimates, 30% of the sowings were lost, with damages amounting to around 50 million euros. A situation that still appears very complex, and which Zaia has already defined as “an exceptional event due to its seasonality and its characteristics”, as has not happened for more than 100 years.
