The athlete from Villa Minozzo has said enough at just under 40 years old. He leaves after the slalom victory at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, 11 podiums and 157 World Cup races. “I have always run to excel. It’s been an exciting career.”
REGGIO EMILIA – “One word to describe my career? Very long (laughs). Jokes aside, exciting.”
Julian Razzoli said enough with skiing. The athlete from Sologno di Villa Minozzo, at the age of forty, has decided to end his competitive career. News that was in the air: the Vancouver 2010 Olympic champion had planned to bid farewell to skiing in the Slovenian stage of Kranjska Gora, last March 6, in what would have coincided with his last race in the World Cup slalom. The cancellation of the stage due to weather conditions postponed the decision which arrived in the last few hours. The athlete, intercepted by our editorial staff at a city event, explained the reason for this choice, without hiding a hint of emotion.
“As you know, my back has struggled a lot in the last year, to tell the truth in the last twenty… – jokes Razzoli – I have always raced with the desire to achieve important results, I have had many injuries and have often returned at a high level. But the goal has always been to race to excel, not to participate. Now I feel like I can no longer run to lead and the time has come to say goodbye.”
Giuliano Razzoli put skis on his feet at the age of four: from his first ski trips in our province he went on to be a protagonist first in the European Cup and subsequently in 157 races on the Ski World Cup circuit. His list includes two victories, in the Croatian stage of Zagreb in 2010 and in the Swiss stage of Lenzerheinde the following year, five second places and four times he placed himself on the lowest step of the podium. Two gold medals at the military world championships, in 2010 and 2013, which add to the icing on the cake of his career, the gold medal in Vancouver. On 27 February 2010, the success worth a career, the only precious metal hit by the Italian expedition in that five-circle edition. “We all know Vancouver – says Razzoli – The beauty of it is that many people I meet, sports lovers, always tell me where they were at that moment and you understand that it was an iconic moment for sports fans”.
