VITERBO – Final approval in the Lazio Region for the construction of the new VT4 reservoir of the landfill in the Le Fornaci area of Viterbo, by the Ecologica Viterbo company. At Palazzo dei Priori a battle is promised, as has already happened during the conferences of the services, and the appeal is filed with the TAR of Lazio. What went wrong with the Waste Management Plan and Optimal Territorial Areas (ATO)? And what’s at stake for Viterbo?
After several years of back and forth in the services conferences, therefore, the new expansion of the landfill was finally approved, even if to a smaller extent compared to the initial project: the fourth site of the company had the approval of some of the sectors after having in fact the inconsistencies found by the Superintendence were overcome.
Among the reasons put in black and white in the authorizations is the fact that Viterbo currently represents the only practically active landfill in Lazio, given that the others, apparently, are running out. But given that there is a Regional Plan for the waste cycle, the latest dated 2019-2025, and there are the Optimal Territorial Areas (ATO), the question arises spontaneously: why, if Viterbo was able to be self-sufficient From a waste perspective, have the others failed? Why, if Viterbo is among the recycling provinces, should it absorb waste from provinces that do not recycle waste enough? What went wrong with the Waste Management Plan to get to work in an ’emergency’?
What awaits the people of Viterbo now are tons of waste from all over the region, truck after truck that will burden traffic and the new asphalt long awaited by citizens. In the meantime, the Mayor of Viterbo, Chiara Frontini, will soon explain everything in a press conference.
