Tumors: a blanket of hope in Taranto

They were delivered this morning the first blankets crocheted by cancer patients as part of the “Wool Therapy” projectpromoted by Clinical psychologydirected by the doctor Dora Chiloiroand made in Moscati hospitals in Taranto and Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca thanks to the collaboration with the association Gomitolorosa and the support of volunteers Acto – Alliance against Ovarian Cancer Puglia.

Activated in January, the project continued in recent months with the presence of the Acto Puglia volunteers who delivered crochet hooks and balls of wool to cancer patients and, while waiting or during the therapies themselves, they accompanied them in the creation of small hexagons which were then joined together to create blankets, leg warmers and other small works.

«Return attention to the person»

“There Illness, especially cancer, is a turning point in life of a person – explained Dr. Dora Chiloiro who, with the Clinical Psychology service directed by her, promoted the initiative in both hospitals – and have the possibility, thanks to this project, to restoring unity and attention to the person was a great result for us. I thank the volunteers of ACTO Puglia for their dedication and the patients who entrusted themselves to them, and all the management who welcomed this activity which promotes humanization and, therefore, gives added value to our structures”.

The Wool Therapy project involved the “Moscati” hospitals in Taranto and “Valle d’Itria” in Martina Franca

This morning the company representatives wanted to meet the ACTO Puglia volunteers, together with some patients who participated in the creation of the artefacts, to thank them for this precious activity. They were present in Taranto the director of Oncology Salvatore Pisconti and the director of the garrison Cosima Farilla who wanted to underline how these covers represented a moment of distraction and probably, thanks to the enthusiasm of the volunteers, also of happiness for the patients during the therapy.

«We thank the management of the hospitals and the management of the local health authority for having shown sensitivity to this project, welcoming it to Taranto and Martina – he declared Grazia Lippo, Acto Puglia contact person – but we can still do so much. We need other volunteers who can help us cover more days, so as to allow more people to participate in these initiatives.”
