Abramo, the silence of the Municipality and Province before the disaster

Abramo, the silence of the Municipality and Province before the disaster

We receive and publish a note on the Abramo Custer Care dispute signed by Movimentando, the latest association born in Crotone with the aim of moving the stagnant political debate. The founding members are Giuseppe Trocino, Andrea Correggia, Andrea Menzano, Davide Monte, Fabrizio Barbieri, Fabrizio Pulvirenti and Noemi Bossi.

That of the workers of Abramo Customer Care is the most important dispute in the city not only because the fate of over 500 families is being decided (which is no small thing), but because overall the fate of a city and a province is being decided, that of Crotone. The loss of the Tim order, which will breathe its last breath in just over a month, has thrown almost 500 employees from all over the province of Crotone into uncertainty. If the worst were to happen, the situation that would be created will have a significant impact on both the economic and social levels of the community.

The loss of over 500 incomes will inevitably have direct consequences on the financial stability of the families involved: we know that many of these workers come from single-income families, and therefore depend exclusively on their salary to support themselves and their families. Nonetheless, if this wasn’t enough to give an idea of the tragedy of this scenario, consider also that the ripple effect will extend to local businesses. The reduction in income will lead to a decrease in consumer spending, negatively affecting shops, restaurants and other services in the Crotone area.

It is not possible to look the other way when faced with a situation that threatens the very economic stability of our territory, yet it almost seems that we don’t want to talk about it and even less about its dramatic social consequences. The social impact, in fact, is equally significant: the loss of jobs does not only affect the individuals involved, but also their families and the community as a whole. Unemployment can lead to emotional distress, family tensions and mental health problems whose shockwave could have repercussions on the social cohesion of the community. The local community could feel abandoned and face further disintegration, marginalization and inequalities, leading to a worsening of already existing tensions and divisions.

In this regard, we ask ourselves whether the Mayor and the President of the Province have already made an estimate of the rubble that this socio-economic tsunami will leave behind, rubble that they will first of all have to collect. Convenient to leave, Pilatesquely, everything in the hands of the trade unions involved who were unable to save the 700 workers fired in 2019 and the approximately 200 workers sacrificed on the altar of the failed renewals of Vodafone contracts. It is clear that the various inter-institutional tables and municipal councils have not been enough if the curtain will fall in just over a month, one way or another and, to date, workers are still hanging by the thread of uncertainty.

There is nothing new even on the front of the pilot project for the reskilling of operators launched with great fanfare by President Occhiuto in March. What funds should finance this project? At what point is the approval process of the amendment to the decree on the Pnrr proposed by the Calabria region precisely to unlock this possible financing line? Have our local representatives asked these questions? And if they know the answers, why are workers instead groping in total darkness? For such an important and delicate issue, a margin of transparency should be guaranteed in the interest of the psychological well-being of over 500 families reduced to a trivial number for negotiations on who knows which and how many tables.

This last month cannot pass in the deafening silence of our local representatives and trade unions and, at the same time, each of us can do our part by talking about it and supporting the Abramo workers in all their initiatives. In moments like this, where the institutions do not seem to actually grasp the real extent of such an issue, we feel obliged to express it concretely
