Aica, the water company of the Agrigento Municipalities, is literally “at loggerheads” with Siciliacque, i.e. the private company, only 25% owned by the Sicilian Region, with overflow functions in the island’s water sector. The general director of Aica, Claudio Guarneri, participated in a meeting called by the “Control Room”, established in Palermo by the president of the Region, Renato Schifani, and chaired by the head of Civil Protection, Salvatore Cocina. Guarneri strongly contested the representative of Siciliacque, claiming the management autonomy of Aica, in the face of what Guarneri himself defined as “undue and unjustified interference on the part of Siciliacque, which claims and claims the right to impose rules and methods on the our supply and distribution work”. The director of Aica believes that a reform of the regional structure that oversees water resources cannot be postponed. “For example, it is not tolerable – underlines Guarneri – that Siciliacque takes water from sources in the Agrigento area, and then resells the water, at a high price, to Aica, and therefore to the people of Agrigento”. “I invite – concludes Guarneri – the Agrigento delegation, regardless of political colour, to commit to remedying a paradoxical and no longer bearable situation”.
