May 17th is the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia to commemorate a historic date: May 17th 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, defining it as “a natural variant of human behavior”. This recognition marked a fundamental step forward towards the valorization of differences and the fight against discrimination.
The day was officially established in 2004 and since then it has been celebrated annually to raise public awareness of the problems of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Also this year, Arcigay Ragusa will participate with two important events.
Screening and Debate in Vittoria: In the morning, Vittoria’s students will watch the film “Pride” together, followed by a debate. This film tells the true story of a group of LGBTQ+ activists who, in the 1980s, supported striking miners in the United Kingdom, promoting solidarity and alliance between different communities.
Vigil against discrimination in Scicli: In the evening, in collaboration with the Evangelical Methodist Church, a vigil against homophobic discrimination will be held. The meeting is at 7pm at the red bench against violence against women in Corso Mazzini. Subsequently, we will move to the church premises (via Carioti, 2) to continue this moment of reflection and solidarity together.
