The Carabinieri have concluded a detailed investigation which led to the referral to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Latina of five people held responsible for a criminal association aimed at scams against the elderly or particularly vulnerable people.

The partnership, made up of four men and a woman, is part of a Roma family unit of Campania origin and has been under observation by the police since the spring of 2022, when several road accidents were reported in the province which later turned out to be simulated with the aim of defrauding unsuspecting motorists.

The group operated using cars rented in Campania and adopted the classic modus operandi of the “mirror scam”. They identified elderly people driving alone and caused false accidents, attributing responsibility to the unfortunate person. Subsequently, with tested tricks, they convinced the motorist of the need to pay them money to avoid an increase in the insurance policy and to avoid the intervention of the police. To make the scam credible, they pretended to call the police to request intervention at the site of the alleged accident, actually calling an accomplice who advised them to agree on an amicable agreement to avoid sanctions.

The investigation made it possible to precisely reconstruct the dynamics of the group, identifying the vehicles, the authors and the tasks of each. Three of the members, considered the most active and dangerous, were subjected to the precautionary measure of house arrest, while the other two were released in a state of freedom.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Latina coordinated the investigation, obtaining the provision issued by the GIP at the Court of Latina, which recognized the reasons for the Carabinieri’s investigations as valid.
