City council, actions against any possible downsizing of Cemivet

May 14, 2024

In recent days, the mayor and the president of the Grosseto municipal council have started a series of institutional contacts aimed at safeguarding Cemivet from any hypothesis of downsizing. In recent days a letter was sent to the Chief of Staff of the Italian Army requesting a meeting: it will be scheduled shortly. Meanwhile this morning the City Council unanimously approved an agenda to safeguard Cemivet from any possible downsizing. The text recalls how the center is today considered the main equine breeding farm of the Italian Army and a center of excellence. The current military veterinary center was established by royal decree on 11 November 1870, covering 4,500 hectares, as one of the four depots in Italy for the production, breeding and training of horses destined for the departments of the Italian army. To date, Grosseto remains the only Italian center where Army horses are born and bred for institutional purposes, competitive sporting activity and the training of students of military academies. The Cemivet, recalls the note filed and approved by the Council, has also obtained recognition from the Ministry of Agricultural, Forestry and Tourism Policies as the best breeding farm for Italian Sella horses in the country. The agenda commits the mayor and the council “to raising awareness among the Ministry of Defense and the military leaders so as to maintain and encourage the strengthening of the activities carried out within the Cemivet, some of which we have seen have a strong social impact”. Furthermore, the document commits the mayor and council, considering the identity and employment value, to “prevent the transfer of Cemivet’s horse breeding activity from Grosseto to other locations”. At Cemivet, we remember, on 7 October 2019 he was granted honorary citizenship. Furthermore, on February 3 last year the entire municipal council was held inside the military structure.
