Coldiretti Piemonte – “Fratelli Tutti”: 1 billion meals a day were wasted worldwide

On all continents, over 1 billion meals a day are wasted, a paradoxical situation if we consider that in the same time 735 million people have been affected by hunger and a third of humanity has had to face food insecurity. It is the photograph by Coldiretti on the occasion of the Food Roundtable “Be Human and the future of global food systems towards 2030”, organized at Palazzo Rospigliosi in Rome as part of the Fratelli Tutti initiatives, from Pope Francis’ encyclical, to which The president of Coldiretti Piemonte and member of the national council Cristina Brizzolari took part.

There are millions of people in the world who survive without eating, without nutrition or with the little that is left to survive. Thus food turns into an instrument for war, rather than an instrument for peace. Instead, nutrition must be an instrument for peace. Harmony and tranquility have to do with quality of life. If there is no quality of life there can be no peace“. This is one of the most significant passages of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Rigoberta Menchù, who spoke at the event.

The future of food and consumers is now put in serious danger by cell-based products, the laboratory-created foods that food oligarchs try to pass off as a solution to food and environmental problems, but are in reality the fruit of a technology with dark contours, with many unknowns that risk changing people’s lives and the environment around us forever – highlight Cristina Brizzolari, president of Coldiretti Piemonte, and Bruno Rivarossa, confederal delegate -. Following this path, the very concept of food will also transform with the transformation of raw materials until it represents a mere form of artificial nourishment, completely in the hands of a few subjects. An important step to reverse this phenomenon comes from the World Farmers Markets Coalition which is one of the ten FAO programs selected as part of the Food Coalition project with the aim of supporting farmers’ markets in different continents to promote income and employment and fight hunger. Among the founding organizations there are, for Italy, Coldiretti and Fondazione Campagna Amica. Among the objectives of the World Farmers Markets Coalition is the diffusion of a model of sustainable economic, environmental and social development, through the short supply chain with support for family farming, the promotion of local food and the emancipation of farmers, in especially women and young people. Some relevant points of the association’s action are the conservation of biodiversity, the fight against climate change and facilitating access to food in the countries most in difficulty”.
