The resident population in Abruzzo, defined on the basis of the Census as of 31 December 2022, amounts to 1,272,627 residents, down compared to 2021 (-3,323 individuals; -0.3%); the province of Chieti is the most populous (29.3%), followed by Pescara (24.6%). The decrease compared to 2021 is the result of the negative values ​​of the natural and internal migration balance, which are insufficiently counterbalanced by the positive values ​​of the foreign migration balance and the statistical adjustment. The mortality rate grew from 12.7 per thousand in 2021 to 13.2 per thousand in 2022, with a peak of 13.6 per thousand recorded in the province of L’Aquila.

Women make up 51.1% of the resident population, exceeding men by over 27 thousand units, mainly due to greater female longevity. The average age increased compared to 2021 from 47.0 to 47.2 years. Pescara and Teramo are the youngest provinces (46.7 and 46.9 years respectively), L’Aquila and Chieti are the oldest (47.7 and 47.5 years). Foreigners registered are 82,904 (+1,916 compared to 2021), 6.5% of the regional population. They come from 159 countries, mainly from Romania (26.3%), Albania (13.0%) and Morocco (9.4%). Less than a tenth of the population (9.3%) lives in the only municipality with over 100,000 inhabitants (Pescara) and less than a quarter in those with a population between 20,001 and 50,000 inhabitants (22.3%). The mountain and internal hill municipalities suffer the greatest population decline and have an older age structure.
