MASSA-CARRARA – “The future of the Apuan Alps must be decided on the territory with all the players involved. The proposal to close the quarries inside the Park is an unacceptable provocation.” Thus the president of the Park Andrea Tagliasacchi at the meeting “Saving the Apuan Alps and Apuan work” organized by Save the Apuan Alps which was held at Palazzo Ducale in Massa (Massa-Carrara) yesterday, Saturday 11 March.

“Beware of shortcuts – said Tagliasacchi – thinking of changing things by asking to transform the regional park into a national park means delegating decisions to others other than us and bringing the discussion to a dead end. If we want to try to solve the problems we must face them here in the territories, with all the players involved, starting with the mayors elected by the same citizens who live in the Park and who represent them. We must all take responsibility for addressing the contradictions that have held back the development of the Park and start a constructive discussion between us.”

Dialogue and listening by everyone
“To address problems, everyone needs dialogue and a willingness to listen. I have had the opportunity to say this on several occasions and I feel like repeating the appeal for a serious discussion because I feel, in general in these months since I was appointed President, a climate of schizophrenia in which everyone has their say, raises the bar, he makes his own proposals and does not speak to the other. This is a serious problem that I’m thinking about tackling. It is surprising, for example, that few people realize the importance of the Park Plan, an instrument that can represent a good basis for discussion for the future of the Apuan Alps, in which significant opportunities can be seized. Because the Plan does not only concern excavation, but socio-economic development realities which are not to be considered in conflict”.

Tools for managing current events
“I would invite us to measure ourselves on concrete issues with the government tools that exist, starting from a fact that is recognized by us: the Park is a regulated area, where the demands for environmental protection have always been higher. The management and control tools to regulate excavation are there. I believe, in this case, there is a need for better communication on authorization procedures between the various institutions called upon to provide opinions and permits to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings. An aspect that deserves attention and for which proposals are being studied which we can then discuss. Then there is the important aspect of site redevelopment and environmental restoration. But thinking of closing the quarries inside the Park is an unacceptable provocation: it means avoiding not solving the problem. In conclusion, it is true that there are critical issues but it is also true that the time we are living in opens up a new phase of opportunities and we are already working on significant projects capable of attracting funding to make this Park take a leap forward”.
