Nemo (Switzerland) wins, appreciated by the European juries and by televoting, did he deserve it?
So, given that I maintain the idea of the previous interview, where I say that Nemo is a very good performer who creates a lot of scene with a beautiful arrangement. Among other things, and this is what Mara Maionchi also shares with me, I don’t think she will remain in history. It’s not that song that we will hear on all the radios in the world, as it was for example for Tattoo by Loreen, which was truly the most deserved and clear recent victory, as it was for Maneskin, as it was for many other songs. I think that the final vote in recent years has always been, although Eurovision is apolitical, a demonstration of Europe to communicate its thoughts to the great powers. Just as it was for Ukraine, which won to demonstrate solidarity, I am firmly convinced that last night, precisely in order not to create particular situations (between Israel and Palestine, which is a delicate situation), Europe wanted to communicate a message of peace. Switzerland, in its neutrality, represents precisely this. So she says ‘Let’s stop and figure out what we want.’ I see it as more of a conspiracy, also because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 12-point win from all these countries in the history of Eurovision.
Croatia with Baby Lasagna second: was it predictable?
I saw Croatia first so yes, predictable, but in my opinion it could have been in first place.
Angelina Mango seventh, did she miss something to win?
No, in my opinion we shouldn’t say ‘only seventh’, in my opinion she came seventh among 26 delegations at European level. A challenge between incredible voices and performances, she made us look great, she was very good. She will get better, she still has a long way to go. Plus we’re the only ones who mostly sing in a language that most people don’t speak.
Do you agree with the first three songs classified or would you have included others?
No, I’m sorry for Belgium because it could have deserved more attention. Nobody mentioned Germany, who had a good song instead, it should have been much higher. I would have seen something in the top 10 again.
Your general opinion on Eurovision 2024?
As always, Eurovision remains the most beautiful show in Europe, if not the world. Every year it increases results and ratings. This opening of the voting to the rest of the world makes me deduce that, as it hangs in the air, we want to have the American Song Contest in the next few years. The same thing in America, and then making the final development in the World Song Contest, is very appealing to me. It will be a beautiful thing. The scene and the stage were a little repetitive in terms of performance. I think that perhaps we had the most beautiful stage in Turin. Here there was more focus on the songs and the performance of the individual artist. But it remains a very strong show.
