Large turnout in Piazza San Francesco for Oral Cancer Day 2024: “Prevention is the new medicine”. 265 oral cavity visits were carried out on Saturday 11 May in Piazza San Francesco, in Terni, on the occasion of Oral Cancer Day, the national event for the prevention of oral cavity diseases promoted by ANDI ETS (National Association of Italian Dentists) .

Roberto Pecci, president of ANDI of Terni, underlines that: “Early diagnosis and prevention guarantee a survival standard of 80% and allow therapeutic interventions that are on average minimally invasive. Currently, there are 9,000 diagnoses of oral cancer per year and of these there is a 5-year mortality rate of 35%. The most alarming fact is that we are talking about carcinous lesions in the oral cavity, therefore in an easily inspected anatomical area where the lesions, even at their initial stage, can be highlighted in a non-invasive way.
Like ANDI we recommend people to have a check-up at the dentist at least once a year, even if they don’t have pain or cavities or other problems. We need to constantly and more widely spread the importance of prevention to increase the number of cases diagnosed early and significantly reduce mortality.”
