Great turnout in Terni for Oral Cancer Day 2024

Large turnout in Piazza San Francesco for Oral Cancer Day 2024: “Prevention is the new medicine”. 265 oral cavity visits were carried out on Saturday 11 May in Piazza San Francesco, in Terni, on the occasion of Oral Cancer Day, the national event for the prevention of oral cavity diseases promoted by ANDI ETS (National Association of Italian Dentists) .

Excellent response from the citizens who went to the square to carry out the free check-up carried out by the dentists of ANDI section. of Terni. Thanks also to the availability of the Association’s doctors Mercy of Terniwhich provided the volunteers and the means in which the checks were carried out, there were 265 visits and in some cases pathologies of the oral cavity worthy of further investigations were found (such as precancerous lesions, inflammatory diseases and disodontiasis).

“An important initiative – explains Dr. Santino Rizzo, president of the Misericordia of Terni – which gives the possibility of discovering lesions that are asymptomatic and makes it clear how useful it is to carry out preventive screening to intercept the onset of a possible pathology early and identify the most timely and least invasive solutions possible for the physical health and psychology of the patient. Prevention is the new medicine. We at Misericordia take it upon ourselves to be able to give help and support to those who try to do so with our means. disposition of your city.”

Roberto Pecci, president of ANDI of Terni, underlines that: “Early diagnosis and prevention guarantee a survival standard of 80% and allow therapeutic interventions that are on average minimally invasive. Currently, there are 9,000 diagnoses of oral cancer per year and of these there is a 5-year mortality rate of 35%. The most alarming fact is that we are talking about carcinous lesions in the oral cavity, therefore in an easily inspected anatomical area where the lesions, even at their initial stage, can be highlighted in a non-invasive way.

Like ANDI we recommend people to have a check-up at the dentist at least once a year, even if they don’t have pain or cavities or other problems. We need to constantly and more widely spread the importance of prevention to increase the number of cases diagnosed early and significantly reduce mortality.”
