inmate brawl, prison officers injured

Palermo juvenile prison: fight breaks out between inmates, two prison police officers who intervened are injured

Another violent event inside the Sicilian prisons, more tension in the juvenile detention facility in Palermo.
Paolo La Corte, local secretary of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union SAPPE, tells what happened in the last hours in the Palermo penitentiary:
“A short while ago, two inmates who were in the large square to enjoy their hour of fresh air started arguing and two policemen, who intervened to calm things down, were bruised and are currently in hospital.
Only thanks to the professional intervention of the Penitentiary Police personnel was the worst avoided.
The situation is unsustainable: my solidarity and best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to my injured colleagues.”

Adapt management and treatment policies for minors

For Donato Capece, general secretary of SAPPE, “for years, especially since politics decided that even adults up to 25 years of age can be confined in juvenile prisons, we have asked in vain the leaders of the Department of Juvenile and Community Justice that the management and treatment policies are adequate for the change of the juvenile prison population.
Detainee population which is increasingly characterized by significant criminal profiles starting from 15/16 years of age and at the same time from adults up to 25 years of age who continue to be restricted.
The reality of Italian juvenile detention, as SAPPE systematically reports, is more complex and problematic than one imagines.”
