the sky lights up pink Gazzetta di Modena

MODENA. Even in many municipalities in the province of Modena she saw herself. And she took everyone by surprise. It’s not an everyday thing, after all, to see the sky light up with those colors that we usually admire when traveling to Northern Europe.

Instead, right in Modena, shortly after 11pm today, Friday 10 May, thenorthern Lights it also appeared in our sky.

Many photos on social media that recounted this extraordinary event.

But what was it about?

SAR – ARC AURORA RED STABLE

This is a fascinating phenomenon known as Saror “stable red auroral arc”. In simple words, it is a play of light, a sort of optical effect or, if we want to be more technical, an incredible atmospheric phenomenon. There Earth it is surrounded by a ring current system, which is located at a distance of between 10,000 and 60,000 kilometers from it and carries millions of amperes.

These currents are constantly carried by high-energy protons. During the geomagnetic storms, the increase in ring current is due to the entry of new low-energy protons into the near-Earth region. When this happens, there is then a release of thermal energy into the Earth’s upper atmosphere which we “see” in the form of the Sar arcs of the auroras. The moon is also spectacular: a magical evening.

THE US NOOA ANNOUNCEMENT

«A strong solar storm is expected to hit the earth between Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May».

There National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOOA) US rated the geomagnetic storm at 4 on a scale of 5.

«A storm assessed on this scale has not occurred since 2005 – it is explained -. The peak of geomagnetic activity could be recorded on Saturday. Furthermore, with the solar storm, we could witness the Northern Lights but the chances will be higher in the Northern United Statesin Canada It is in the northern Europe. Geomagnetic storms are difficult to predict, and Northern Lights forecasts can sometimes disappoint if a storm’s timing changes or its magnetic field is not aligned with that of the Earth. Meteorologists won’t know the exact timing until about 20 to 45 minutes before the storm hits Earth. Intense geomagnetic storms, however, can sometimes also have repercussions on energy networks, GPS communications or geostationary satellites. The storm is not expected to have a direct effect on cell phones or credit cards, but a power outage could have secondary effects.”
