Don Maurizio Verlezza, 63 years old, is a point of reference for Catholic movements and the faithful across half of Italy. And now they are all stunned by the news of his arrest, last Wednesday, in Velletri prison, where he had gone to bring a package of clothes to an inmate. The religious man thought he would leave immediately, but instead he remained inside, blocked by the prison police: in the package there were two smartphones, a kilo of marijuana and half a pound of hashish. He could appear before the investigating judge on Saturday for the validation hearing. During the search of his accommodation, the officers also found 20 thousand euros in cash of suspicious origin.
Famous in Latina and Genzano
Formerly parish priest of the cathedral of San Marco in Latina, then responsible for the center in via Mazzini, but also for the oratory of Don Bosco in Genzano, where he was recently assigned, a few months ago the priest had become chaplain in the penal institution in Velletri, one of the most problematic in the complicated scenario of the Lazio prisons, as repeatedly reported by the Penitentiary unions. The faithful, with whom Don Maurizio has established a series of daily contacts, not only of prayer but also of civil commitment, are shocked.
